The Eliza Coffee Memorial Hospital has been certified as a primary stroke care center by the Joint Commission.
It has been a goal for the hospital since 2013 when ECM began surveying its neurology services. In October 2014, Dr. Rodney Soto was hired by ECM as a neurohospitalist — an in-house neurologist — to complete the 24-hour doctor coverage needed to qualify for the Joint Commission certification.
“We have all the infrastructure and manpower to implement treatment in a certain time,” Soto said. “There is a three-hour window to give the so-called clot-buster medication. That is a national benchmark, and it can’t be accomplished at a lot of centers.”
